The Safety, Planning and Environmental Coordination Office is responsible for providing budget
planning, execution, and oversight in coordination with the National Office in Boise, the State
Budget Office, and the AFS management team.
The Office supports a comprehensive and integrated team approach to Occupational Health and
Safety, Wildland Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials Coordination, and Aviation Safety through the
se of designated employees and a corp of Collateral Duty Safety Officers.
The Office ensures the
maintenance of a safe, healthy working environment and that all operations conform to accepted
safety policies, directives, and standards.
The Office manages and maintains all OSHA mandated
safety programs and ensures that all Environmental and Hazardous Material regulations and
standards are adhered to.
The Office also coordinates and maintains the Alaska Fire Medic
Program, EMT certification requirements, Fire Fighter Medical Standards physicals, and Federal
Employees Health Program.
The Office conducts pre- and post-fire season safety, health, and
hazard reviews, yearly facility inspections, and investigations of any serious accident or injury
in order to determine mitigating factors, correct any identified violations, and prevent potential
safety problems.
The Office manages and maintains the Safety Management Information System for
reporting of accidents and incidents.
