<prcStep>
<stepDesc>LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type (EVT) raster data was used as the input landcover rater. The EVT raster to clipped to coincide with the boundaries of the Alaska Predictive Service Areas. We found that fire scars from 2017-2022 were missing from the landcover raster. The missing fire scars were converted to rasters and mosaiced into the original landcover raster to produce and updated landcover dataset. The updated landcover dataset was reclassified based on generalized vegetation type and hazard rating. Generalized types and hazard ratings are presented below. The format is: Generalized type Name (100m reclass value | 500 m reclass value)
Evergreen Forest ( 100 | 100 )
Low-Tall Shrub/Herbaceous/Deciduous Forest ( 30 | 6 )
Mixed Forest ( 75 | 75 )
Sparsely Vegetated/Barren ( 0 | 0 )
Tussock Tundra ( 50 | 20 )
Water/Ice ( 0 | 0 )
Woodland (100 | 100 )
Fire scar, 1-3 years old ( 0 | 0 )
Fire scar, 4+ years old ( 30 | 6 )
Reclassification resulted in two new rasters (reclass100m, reclass500m).
Prevalence of volatile fuels was calculated using focal statistics and raster calculator tools.
For short range spotting (reclass100m), we used a circular neighborhood with a 3-cell radius to sum the surrounding cells. Prevalence of volatile fuels was calculated using raster calculator to divide cell values by 29 and return an integer. For long range spotting (reclass500m), we used a circular neighborhood with a 16-cell radius to sum the surrounding cells. Prevalence of volatile fuels was calculated using raster calculator to divide cell values by 797 and return an integer. Water/ice pixels from the original input landcover raster reclassified to 101 and mosaiced into the long range and short-range spotting exposure rasters. The intent of the water/ice patch is to make the dataset easier for users to interpret and to distinguish areas unlikely to burn (e.g., sparse vegetation) from those that will not burn (e.g., water).
After the water/ice pixels were added , the rasters were reclassified a second time.
Prevalence values were reclassified as follows:
Values between 0 and 19 were reclassified to 1 (Very Low).
Values between 20 and 39 were reclassified to 2 (Low).
Values between 40 and 59 were reclassified to 3 (Moderate).
Values between 60 and 79 were reclassified to 4 (High).
Values between 80 and 100 were reclassified to 5 (Maximum).
Values of 101 were reclassified to 10 (Water/Ice).
