These data represent the fire management option boundaries for the state of Alaska. The spatial extent of this dataset matches the BLM Alaska Terrestrial Boundary and that boundary is subject to revision. The four fire management options are "critical", "full", "modified", and "limited". Fire management options are designated by the land managers or owners and are reviewed annually, as outlined in the Alaska Interagency Wildland Fire Management Plan, October 1998. Several large areas are designated as "unplanned". These include areas where the land manager/owner did not participate in the planning process. Many more of the "unplanned" areas are islands. Native Allotments are managed as "full" protection areas, and are included in this dataset as such. The process of updating the Options with Allotments leaves several sliver polygons of different protection level around the Allotments in some areas.
Graphical display of fire management options in Alaska. Fire suppression organizations use the fire management options to determine initial attack priorities and suppression tactics. The highest priority for suppression response is given to fires occurring in or threatening a "critical" area, followed in order of priority by "full", "modified", and "limited".

2006: Fire Management Options exported from SDE to Personal GeoDatabase. The Spatial Domain and Precision levels of the Personal GeoDatabase were increased to more closely match historical ArcInfo coverages. The current values can be found in the bounding coordinates. The precision used is 46348215.7710263 Management Options Boundaries were updated based on a mix of hardcopy maps, gis datasets, and textual descriptions. All information was provided by the suppression FMO.

Dataset accuracy has been updated to High Precision with the implementation of ArcGIS 9.2. This has caused some minor shifting in line placements. A majority if these shifts are less than 5" GSD. Corrections of the dataset have occured based on land manager inputs from their base maps.

2018: Updated Fire Management Options: Polygons representing Native Allotments were imported as areas of "Full" protection, except those within "Critical" protection areas, which were clipped out. Changed 23,801.1 acres of "Modified - July 10" to "Limited" along the lower Alsek River in Glacier Bay National Park. Also made several small changes around the community of Gustavus. Changed 853 acres of "Critical" to "Full" and also 1342.1 acres of "Modified - July 10" to "Limited" within Kenai Fjords National Park near Seward.

2019: Updated options near Toolik Field Station. This is a change form Limited to Critical for 3,139 acres around the Toolik Station and a change from Limited to Full for 7,636 acres to the east of the Station. Updated options within the boundary of Kenai Fjords National Park along three areas of the coast. All changes involved moving lands from Full protection to Limited Protection. Updated options in the Seward Peninsula. Serpentine Hot Springs vicinity: 55,347 acres of the Modified polygon surrounding the Hot Springs converted from Modified (Jul 10) to Limited and 1650 acres converted from Limited to Modified (Jul 10) to follow a natural barrier. Northern peninsula / Imuruk Lake vicinity: 1,376,444 acres converted from Modified to Limited (NPS, BLM and State). Nuluk River vicinity: 372,844 acres south and west of Nuluk River converted from Modified to Limited (NPS, BLM, State). Northern Peninsula (southwest of Buckland): 66,886 acre polygon converted from Full to Modified (Aug 20) (BLM). Values at risk do not warrant Full protection status, and this polygon will be converted to protection option of the surrounding area (Modified - Aug 20).
