Only areas where there was a change in protection level are included. Fire Management Options, also known as protection levels or the Alaska Wildland Fire Management Plan (AWFMP), are used by fire managers to determine the initial response to a fire start. While U.S. Wildland Fire Service, Alaska (AFS), State of Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection (DFFP), and Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USFS) are responsible for fire suppression, the options are defined by the land managers or jurisdictional agencies. These may be federal, state, or private entities. Before 1982, fire management protection levels were arranged on an ad hoc or case-to-case basis with the operational imperative being to suppress all wildfire. The plan has been updated several times over the years, but the basic structure has remained the same. Refer to the Alaska Interagency Wildland Fire Management Plan for more information (https://fire.ak.blm.gov/administration/asma.php). These data are intended to highlight changes in Fire Management Options / Protection Levels in Alaska over time. Unknown, accuracy requirements are generally determined by the required use of the Protecting Agencies and Jurisdictional Agencies. Note that accuracy has improved over time. Historical data was translated into a common format with similar attributes. Beginning with the current year’s fire management options and continuing with each preceding year, the polygon features representing consecutive years (e.g. 2018 and 2019) were combined using the intersect tool. Areas where the Protection Level of year X was not equal to Protection Level of year Y were identified as areas that had changed.
