description: This dataset is intended to help determine the date when to start and when to stop the calculation of fire weather indices. It is derived from two different datasets that depict the presence or absence of snow. This is a dataset is produced by combining two different data sources that represent snow status. Data source 1= IMS GeoTIFF rasters are downloaded and clipped to the Alaska Predictive Services Boundaries. The resulting raster is reclassified to values of 1 where snow is present (original value =4) and 0 where snow is absent (original values 1, 2, and 3). Data source 2 = NASA SPoRT Land Information System (LIS) Alaska Snow Depth at 2100 UTC are downloaded and reclassified to values of 3 where snow is present (original values of 1 or greater) and 0 where snow is absent (original values = 0). A value of "3" representing snow presence was selected so that users could identify areas where the two input data sets converge and diverge.
